Continued from 10/23/10. Thank goodness my husband was allowed to hold my hand during the epidural process because it helped calm me down. The fear of the unknown can really get your anxiety level high. I was terrified to deliver a huge baby out of what in my mind is a small hole. For months now I have been extremely scared for how all of this was going to happen. In the past I had gotten a cortisone injection in my knee and the needle was HUGE; I'm pretty sure it's the same size they use for an epidural. The pain from the cortisone was absolutely awful. However, with the contractions coming so frequently and painfully I would've done anything to take them away. The numbing medicine they used did hurt slightly as it went in near my spinal cord but, again, I just wanted relief. By the time they had inserted a catheter and the epidural injection into my back I didn't care; it was just an ever so subtle pressure. The epidural basically started working immediately. Right before the epidural I was having contractions every 4 minutes up to 25% (not sure what that part means) but by halfway through the day I was up to one per minute at 90%. Thank goodness I didn't have to feel what that was like. Soon after the injection my legs started to go numb as well as my abdomen. I was finally feeling good. My mother-in-law had arrived in the room and soon thereafter so did one of my best friends, sister-in-law, mom, and aunt. I could not have enjoyed their company unless I had gotten the epidural. They helped the time go by quickly. We had been admitted around 6 am and I didn't deliver until 12 hours later so it was a long day! To be continued...
