Continued from 11/4/10. FJ was improving from the pneumonia and the doctor had now given me the OK to begin breast feeding. The nurse had already called in the lactation nurse before we had even arrived at the SCN that day. Remember, I had already mentioned how leery I was of these nurses? As soon as the nurse walked in she saw my store bought pump and started into why I needed to only be using the hospital grade pump and where I could rent one. For some reason this immediately turned me off because she was already telling me what I was doing wrong and where I needed to spend my money. Plus, I was thinking this Medela pump was about 250 bucks, I had borrowed mine from a friend and had just bought my own personal accessories so it was sanitary. But, if I'd paid for the pump myself and then the nurse was telling me it was no good that really would have ticked me off. Next, without any discussion she grabbed my boob and my screaming child and slammed the back of his head onto the boob. My son was wailing at this point and there was no possibility that he was going to calm down to start trying to find milk out of this thing. She kept repositioning FJ and my boob but to no avail, it was not successful. He latched on for maybe a minute and then we gave up. My husband and I went home that night completely turned off to breast feeding. Our thought process was, "Why torture my son and cause his breathing to go through the roof as he sucks for oxygen just to get him to breast feed?!" It just wasn't worth it to us. We decided to pump and supplement. When I came back in the next day and told my SCN nurses they exchanged a look. At first I thought it was because they were judging me and thought I was just giving up which they looked down upon. It wasn't until that afternoon that I learned the reason behind their look. To be continued...
