How can you keep those new crowns (caps) you just received looking good? The first way is to use a proper toothpaste. The real abrasive toothpastes will dull the top surface over time. Whitening toothpastes usually fall into this category. The easiest way for you to tell, is when you brush your teeth, can you feel the gritty texture of the toothpaste, or is it smooth? Over time the grit acts like sandpaper and removes the outer coating of the porcelain on the crown. This will dull the crown as it looses its high polished glaze. The next way is to use a soft or extra soft toothbrush. A medium hardness brush will also act like sandpaper and dull the crown. Next, watch out for the types of foods that you eat. If you eat high acidic foods and keep them directly on the teeth, it will dull the crown. You may be asking yourself what are high acid foods? Many people like to suck on lemon and orange wedges. These are very acidic and can quickly remove the shine from that new crown. Soda pop is also very bad not only because of the amount of tooth decay it causes, but it is acidic also and will ruin your new dentistry.
In addition to crowns, this also applies to dental bonding. When our patients come into the office for their professional dental cleaning, a special polishing paste is used that will not only prevent dulling of the restoration, but will actually enhance the shine to keep it lasting a long time. Common sense is the best advice. If you are unsure, always ask your dentist.
