What if a company had developed tooth enamel as a drug and wanted to get it approved by the FDA? We know that enamel is the strongest substance in the body. But it should be treated well in order for it to last. Enamel left in acid would dissolve. The FDA would not like that and could easily veto its use. Patients that drink any sugar drinks, are subjecting their enamel to this acid. Any soda drink will also do this, even if it is diet. It is still acidic and will destroy enamel. If a patient were to take a small sip every few minutes of soda, within a few months cavities would develop and the enamel would break down.
Another FDA stumbling block would be that it is not color stable. Smoking is the worst offender, but tea and red wine also will discolor enamel. Enamel has many positive properties, these two disadvantages of enamel would probably never allow to get past the FDA and produce enamel if it were a drug or new dental product. Therefore, it is best to take care of your teeth and keep them looking their best for a lifetime.
