A glimpse into one of my own "horror" weight stories...

I was fresh out of college and had just landed my first teaching job.  I had happened to graduate in December and luckily enough gotten a job in January at an inner-city charter school.  It was extremely diverse and a wake up to the reality many families from poverty live in on a daily basis.  Imagine being eager and excited to make a difference in the lives of young kids...and very naive.  The kids I worked with grew up in a culture of honesty.  They said what was on their minds whether is was positive or negative.  There was no filter.

It was my first week of school and I was still living in my bubble.  I walked into class and the first thing out of one of my student's mouth was, "Miss Y (that was my maiden name at the time), you won't be here long.  You're pregnant!"  Of course I was completely shocked and embarrassed that someone asked this.  I quickly responded that I absolutely was not.   This just provoked my student further.

"Miss Y, you're fooling us.  Why don't you just tell us the truth - we know you're pregnant.  I mean, look at that belly."

Oh my gosh, I went from embarrassed to just plain mortified.  I'm not kidding, I did the most unprofessional thing possible.  I gave them seatwork, told the teacher across the hall to listen for them, and ran to the nearest phone.  I instantly called my Mom and bawled to her for the next 15 minutes.  My weight had always been something I struggled with and tried to hide; here was a student calling it exactly what it was - a huge belly.   My Mom tried to calm me down so I could go back to class.

I can laugh about it now but it sure wasn't one of my finer memories.  Having all that extra weight just caused me to hate myself.  Thank goodness I finally did something about it and it actually worked!

Tomorrow I am going to a fair with friends.  Watch how I handle the social aspect, which always usually centers around food.
