1/8/15 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Saturday

Apparently things have changed since I had breakfast duty at school before my maternity leave.  While our school may not have had the most healthy options for the kids' breakfast and lunch I know they did try to.  But, since being back I wonder if that's still the objective.  As of next year all Ohio schools are being cut millions of dollars that used to be provided by the federal government.  Education has had yet to feel the full effects of the recession...until now.  I can't help but consider it a possibility that in an effort to most likely save jobs and cut costs food was included as well.  We all know healthier options are much more expensive than junk food, white bread and pasta, etc.  It was just my fourth day back when I was appalled to see that pizza for breakfast was being served.  It most certainly was not whole wheat crust, low-fat mozzarella, and turkey sausage!  Instead, it was cheesy, greasy goodness that yes, looked and smelled delicious (I'm 100% a pizza lover no matter what kind!) but what kind of message are sending our children?  Here I was stewing over Thursdays breakfast when Fridays was no better- pizza sausage bagels for breakfast!  I know the kids love it but again, we are modeling some unhealthy choices for our children.  I truly am worried about the children of our future and the battle of obesity.
