A while back I wrote about the importance of regular dental hygiene and check-ups.  I was reminded of this fact when reading a woman’s story in one of the 12 magazines I read every month.  She described an extreme feeling of fatigue; aching in her joints, sore gums, and subsequent depression (can you blame her?).  She saw her internist who wanted her on anti-depressants or hormone replacement therapy.  Her physical pains lead to isolation.  It began to spiral.

She was referred to a dentist by a friend.  He gave her teeth a deep cleaning (she hadn’t been for regular check-ups in several years) and did a CRP test which measures inflammation in the gums.  She had gingivitis.

Within weeks, her symptoms were greatly alleviated or were completely gone.  She got her life back.

Gingivitis, http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/gumdisease.html , can present itself through a variety of symptoms.  What’s the best solution?  Schedule regular dental check-ups with a dentist every 6 months (there are dentist who specialize in patients with extreme dental fear by using twilight sedation and other means to relax you).  Brush and floss daily.  Watch your vitamin D and Omega 3 fatty intakes.  There seems to be a connection with these supplements and good dental health.

Don’t take oral health for granted.

A.M. Snack-

protein shake with 1/2 cup pasturized egg whites (190 cal)

1/2 whole wheat sandwich with 2 oz sliced  roasted turkey ( low sodium) (140 cal) 


5 oz salmon (180 cal)

Salad- 2 cup spinach, 1/2 sweet pepper,2 tbls black beans, 2 oz fat free feta (159 cal)

3 oz. quinoa (120 cal)

P.M. Snack-

8 oz fat free cottage cheese (140 cal)

apple slices, low fat cheddar slices (110 cal)


 5 oz pork loin (210 cal)

 1 cup roasted cauliflower, onions (35 cal)

1/2 cup whole wheat cous cous, with pesto (175 cal)
