Yesterday I got out walking on the street for the first time since I got to go to Florida in January. It has been way to cold here until now. It was a hard walk since it has been so long. When I walk I have a very quick, somewhat strange looking gate. It’s like a run walk. The tendon in the back of my right leg started to tighten up, so I jogged for a while. It got me thinking, which one was most efficient from a cardio stand point. I feel like whatever gets your heart rate up (here is where a cardio heart rate monitor comes in handy) is going to burn the most calories. Plus, I can go a lot further doing my speed walk, then I can jog. I looked on line for a clinical point of view and found a quote from Dr. Tim Church, Director of the Laboratory of Preventative Medicine at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center:
“If you weigh 150 pounds and walk 2 miles in 30 minutes you will burn 170 calories. If you jog 2 miles in 20 minutes then you will burn 230 calories. It’s really about speed. Most people don’t jog faster than they speed walk.”
I came away from this information feeling like I’m doing the best cardio I can with my speed walk. It really works my core and keeps my back limber because my hips are really rotating. It definitely gets my heart rate up, and I can go for 60 minutes without running out of gas..plus, I got some great vitamin D and a smile on my face just to be outside!
