How do you help your child's teeth looking great after orthodontics? Braces do a great job improving the aesthetics and self esteem of children and adults. But all too often, removal of the braces reveals discolored teeth that were not present prior to the braces. This happens because of insufficient oral hygiene (proper brushing) during the time the braces are on, accumulated plaque leads to a demineralization of the tooth around the bracket. Children tend to ignore the teeth when braces are on because "it is too hard to brush". Extra care must be used when brushing the teeth around the braces. All food and plaque must be removed completely around the bracket that attaches the braces to the teeth. Most problems are seen where the brushing is minimal, especially between the gum and the top of the bracket. Since brushing is ignored, the gums become puffy, gets closer to the bracket and it is even harder to keep the area clean. Help you child brush this area well. You will probably see some bleeding around the infected gums and avoid it further. Do not do this! Brush these areas even better. New electric toothbrushes do a great job of dental plaque removal. Some of these brushes even have brush heads designed specifically to work around the brackets. Diligence during the time braces are on will pay off in a beautiful smile for years to come.

Your dentist may have discussed the benefits of having healthy teeth and proper jaw alignment with you. Crooked and crowded teeth are harder to clean and maintain. This can result in tooth decay, gum disease, and lead to tooth loss. Treatment by a orthodontist can be less costly than the additional care required to treat dental problems that result from orthodontic problems.
