Recently, my cousin from Texas (age 35) suffered a small stroke following a serious heart surgery.  In an effort to be more informed about his issues, I found an article in The Wall Street Journal from June 5, 2012.  The author, Shirley Wang, states that about 4 million people per year survive strokes in the U.S.

Only about 1/3 of those survivors get rehab to address the physical side effects from stroke.  Opinions of the most effective physical therapy (pt.), is controversial.  There is traditional rehab for the lower limbs known as ‘underground’ training (repeat movements).  They’ve developed split-belt treadmill therapy to help speed the smoothing of the walking gate more quickly.

For most survivors, damage happens in the cerebrum which governs speech and thinking.  Physical therapy for these issues is a slow and methodical process

My father had a stroke but was lucky to be quickly admitted into a trial-group for tPA. It has been approved since then and is highly effective for returning the body’s functions that may have shown paralysis from the stroke.

Continues research reveals new therapies and drugs that help stroke survivors attain a quality of life without paralysis.

Friday 07/06/12- Food Diary:


1/2 cup egg whites, 1/8 cup brocolli, 1 cup spinach, 1/2 tsp. organic chia seeds (70 cal)

2 pieces Ezekial brd, 1 tbls organic almond butter (220 cal)

A.M. Snack-

1 cup pasturized egg whites,1/2 scoop whey protein shake mix (195 cal)


Wrap- 1 cup low sodium black beans (rinsed), 1 whole wheat , low-carb tortilla, 6 asparagus, 5 crunchy pea pods, 1/4 cup 0% Greek yogurt (370 cal)

2 oz water packed tuna (90 cal)

1/3 cup chopped tomatoes (20 cal)

P.M. Snack-

8 oz non-fat cottage cheese, 2 cut prunes on top (140 cal)

Dinner- restaurant

salad with vegetables and a grilled chicken breast, blue cheese, oil/vinegar (360 cal)

Fresh sliced tomatoes, fresh mozarella, fresh basil, drizzle of olive oil/ balsamic vinegar (180 cal)


Homemade popcorn, sprayed with I Can't Believe Its Not Butter (90 cal)
